Summary Eddard Stark is the head of House Stark, one of the Great Houses of Westeros. He wields a Valyrian greatsword named Ice (an heirloom of House Stark) which he uses on ceremonial occasions. He was set to be executed; however, he escaped and made his way back North.

Summary Catelyn was born into House Tully as the eldest daughter and child of Lord Hoster Tully. She has a younger brother, Edmure, and a younger sister, Lysa. She was betrothed to marry Brandon Stark of Winterfell, but he was brutally murdered by the Mad King. Catelyn instead married Brandon's brother, Eddard. Catelyn has five children: Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon.

Eddard's wife, Catelyn, was deeply unhappy with this arrangement and it remains the largest source of dissent between them. Amongst his half-siblings Jon is closest to Robb, Arya, and Bran.

Summary Jaime Lannister is a prodigy of a warrior. Knighted at fifteen and appointed to the Kingsguard by King Aerys II Targaryen soon after. However, Jaime's appointment angered his father, Tywin, since it meant Jaime was no longer his heir, the honor of which instead fell to Tywin's misshapen and hated youngest son, Tyrion. At the end of Robert's Rebellion, Jaime betrayed his king by murdering him at the foot of the Iron Throne itself. Jaime was forgiven his crime by King Robert Baratheon and reinstated to the Kingsguard, but he has carried the name 'Kingslayer' ever since.

Summary Tyrion is the youngest son of Lord Tywin Lannister and the younger brother of Jaime and Cersei Lannister. He does not get on with his father, and to this end spends a lot of time at court in King's Landing to avoid him. Tyrion gets on well with Jaime but has a cooler relationship with Cersei. Summary Daenerys is the only daughter and youngest child of the deceased King Aerys II Targaryen, and is now is only surviving child. Magister Illyrio Mopatis and her brother Viserys arranged the marriage of Daenerys to Khal Drogo of the Dothraki in return for the use of his forty thousand warriors in invading Westeros. However, Viserys offended Drogo and was executed. Drogo was then injured in an altercation with a subordinate and later died of his injuries. His warriors split, leaving Daenerys alone aside from a few loyal retainers. Daenerys burned her husband's body and the witch she blamed for his death. She also placed three alleged dragon eggs on the pyre, a gift from Magister Illyrio, and stepped into the flames herself. After the smoke cleared, Daenerys was left unharmed with three newly-hatched dragons at her side.
